My entire life my parents would tell me, Jacob, you are meant to be a teacher, I still have the license of my great uncle from the early 1900s. Although, I thought I had different plans. I graduated from Cumberland University in 2006 with my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. From there I went to work in sales, I enjoyed the work, but it was far from my wife and my hometown. Some months later a position opened in my hometown, I was contacted by the owner and offered a job. For the next two years, I worked in my hometown in sales. I thought it was going well until the recession of 2008 hit and my career in sales was over.
I then shifted my thought process of what I would do. I went back to what my parents suggested my entire life, teaching. There was an opening in World Geography at my local high school, Warren County High School in McMinnville, TN and I applied for it. It was truly meant to be. I completed the alternate licensing program through the state of Tennessee while also completing my Masters in Eduction from Cumberland University. Since becoming a teacher, I realize this is what my calling was all along. I have never been more passionate than I am when shaping the lives of children.
In the seven and a half years of teaching, I have grown as an educator. What I did not receive with formal training I have made up substantially in teaching experience. I am always learning every day. I have switched subjects from World Geography to United States History. I have become the department chair of our Social Studies department. I currently am serving on the leadership team at Warren County High School. I have recently started a “Coffee Ed” talk with fellow teachers at the school. The “Coffee Ed” concept is a way for my fellow teachers at the school to come together and talk about certain things we are passionate about and how we can make ourselves and our school better. I am in the process of heading up an EdCamp style PD for my school and have recently been accepted into Amazon Education’s private beta for Open Educational Resources. I have extensive experience with Microsoft Office, Google Docs, iOS, Android platforms and Odysseyware.
I have experienced all children in every walk of life. It is my desire to help every child to learn at his or her pace. Seeing a child graduate is one of my favorite parts of teaching.
I am married to a Gorgeous wife, and God has blessed me with two beautiful children. I also enjoy the outdoors, and coaching my daughter’s T-Ball team.
