The ROOTED Lesson Framework
Six steps. One page to plan. Built on durable findings from learning science and designed to work in every subject.
The Problem ROOTED Solves
Teachers often inherit a different template from every initiative, curriculum, and rubric. Planning time goes to filling boxes instead of designing learning, and students feel the inconsistency from one room to the next. ROOTED offers one clear daily structure that any good curriculum can live inside.
The Six Steps
R: Retrieve
Pull prior learning back out of memory so it sticks and gives today something to attach to.
O: Orient
Spark curiosity, show why today matters, and make the learning goal and success criteria visible.
O: Out Loud Modeling
Show how an expert thinks through the task, step by step, using words and visuals together.
T: Try Together
Practice with support, quick checks for understanding, and feedback in the moment.
E: Exercise Independence
Students do the thinking on their own, with productive struggle and some mixed review of older content.
D: Debrief and Check
A short exit check shows the teacher what tomorrow needs, and students see their own progress.
Why It Works
Remembering strengthens memory.
Research on retrieval practice shows that pulling information out of memory builds stronger learning than simply reviewing it again. Spacing that practice over days and weeks helps it last.
Clear steps help new learners.
Barak Rosenshine’s widely used Principles of Instruction describe what effective teachers do: review daily, teach in small steps, model, guide practice, and check for understanding before students work alone. ROOTED is organized around those principles.
Seeing the thinking lowers the load.
Working memory is limited. Worked examples paired with meaningful visuals help students learn without being overwhelmed.
Checking during the lesson changes the lesson.
Formative assessment research shows that gathering evidence of learning, and acting on it, is one of the most reliable ways to improve achievement.
Buy in comes from real success.
Self determination theory tells us people engage more deeply when they feel capable, have a meaningful say, and feel they belong. ROOTED builds those experiences into every step instead of adding them on.
What ROOTED Is Not
- Not a script. Time guidance supports professional judgment; it does not replace it.
- Not a curriculum. It works with your adopted materials.
- Not a compliance checklist. It is a shared language for learning.
- Not a promise of a specific result. Research averages are not guarantees; outcomes depend on thoughtful implementation.
Bring ROOTED to Your Team
ROOTED Lesson Design Training is a half day session for teacher teams, coaches, and leaders. Every participant leaves with a lesson planned for the coming week.
